We thought it would serve as a necessary introduction to outline the most commonly asked questions and answers we have addressed with respect to CRN Registration. We hope you find this helpful and encourage you to get in touch with us if you have any further questions.

1. Why Do I Need a CRN Registration?

You must register a CRN before fabricating a pressure vessel, boiler, pressure piping, or fitting. If inspectors or auditors find unregistered equipment during a site visit that cannot be registered as built, you must replace it. The efforts of registering before might be laborious but are necessary and can save you time and money in the long run.

2. What Requires CRN Registration?

The code tends to vary slightly for Canada and the US, but Canada is a bit more restrictive when it comes to pressure vessels. Also, in Canada there is some slightly variation by province. Overall, manufacturers must build pressure vessels, fittings, and piping systems to comply with the appropriate quality control programs.

3. Who Issues the Registration?

Each Canadian province issues its own registration and assigns a CRN for manufacturers to stamp on the vessel nameplate. To register across all of Canada, you must obtain a registration by all 7 of the jurisdictions below:

  • British Columbia (TSBC)
  • Alberta (ABSA)
  • Saskatchewan (TSASK)
  • Manitoba (ITSM)
  • Quebec (RBQ)
  • Maritimes, NW Territories, Newfoundland, etc. (ACIC)

4. What is the Process of Applying for a CRN?

In order to obtain the requirements and forms required for each jurisdiction, it is best to contact them directly. Obtaining a registration in more than one province/jurisdiction is a bit more complicated. We recommend starting with a single province or jurisdiction. Once you obtain the initial registration, you can submit reciprocal applications with any required additional paperwork to other jurisdictions.

5. When Should I Apply for a CRN?

You should apply for a CRN right away, well before you begin fabrication. Review times vary depending on design complexity, the target province or jurisdiction, and the quality of your submitted documentation. Considering all of these factors, you could receive your CRN as early as 1 month or as late as 3-5 months.
