The 5 W’s of Prestart Health & Safety Reviews (PSR)

1. WHAT is a Prestart Health and Safety Review (PSR)? A Pre-Start Health and Safety Review (PSR) is an audit completed by a Professional Engineer of any industrial apparatus, protective element, process, or structure, to ensure compliance with applicable standards with Section 7 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 2. WHEN is a Prestart Healthy and Safety Review (PSR) required? According to Section 7 of Regulation 851 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (S.7 of O.Reg. 851) the following items are examples requiring a Pre-Start Review: • When a building, room or area is used to store or dispense flammable liquids • When the following protective elements are used: light curtains and screens area scanning systems radio frequency systems and capacitance systems safety mat systems two hand controls barrier guards using interlocked electrical or mechanical safeguards • When racking or stacking structures are used to store material • Where processes that involve a risk of ignition or explosion are installed or modified • When a dust collector is used that involves a risk of ignition or explosion • When a factory produces aluminum or steel, or a factory that is a foundry • When a lifting device, traveling crane or automobile hoist is installed or modified • When a process uses or produces a substance (i.e. chemical) that may result in the overexposure of a worker to limits prescribed by Ontario regulations Source: https://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/pubs/psr/psr_4.php 3. WHY is conducting a Prestart Health and Safety Review (PSR) a good idea? There are several benefits to conducting a PSR but here are the three main ones: 1. It identifies safety issues to be corrected in an organized and effective manner. 2. Potential cost savings can be identified as a result through work efficiencies and proper installation and placement of equipment. 3. Safe operation and installation of equipment reduces the risk of injuries, lost time and can potentially lower insurance premiums by preventing workplace injuries. 4. WHO A professional engineer only must conduct a PSR, and sometimes depending on requirements, a professional engineer from more than one discipline may be required. When this is the case, the names and disciplines of all reviewers involved should be outlined and included in the report. Pricing is based on various factors, such as the type of machine or equipment, type of installation being reviewed, and technical documentation available. ACME Drawings FOR SALE!!!

ACME is well known for a couple of different reasons. The main frame of reference for some is it’s fictional reference in the “Looney Tunes” cartoons when Wile E. Coyote would try (and always fail) to sabotage Road Runner. The ACME we know that actually did exist is best known for their ACME Drawings and we sell them here at Cemcorp. In 2002, Cemcorp acquired sole ownership of ACME drawings. Considering ACME had 50 years in the brewery equipment industry, the acquisition made sense at the time to be able to offer them to those that had this equipment installed. We also own drawings for the ACME Radial Valley Bottom Lauter Tubs, which offer three patented features: 1. Radial Valley Bottom: This encourages a three-way flow that produces quicker clarification and faster run-off time. Since there is greater flow velocity it helps prevent sediment deposits and increasing yield. 2. Flushing System Between Bottoms: A special device flushes each section of the lauter tub simultaneously between true and false bottoms. There is also a separate unit solely provided for the occasional flushing of accumulated sugar, grits or other sedimentation that can interfere with an efficient operation. To sum this up, it helps the system run as smooth as it can by flushing out old and built up sediment. Cool huh? 3. Grain Discharge Valve: This valve is specially designed to drain and filter the entire bottom area and in the bottom area, and where the discharge valve is placed. This makes the inside surface completely effective. If you are interested, we have many ACME drawings available for purchase depending on your specific job number. 13th Annual ADI Distilling Conference

From April 4th – 7th, Cemcorp’s directors, Steve and Dina Harkness had the pleasure of taking part in ADI’s annual distilling conference. This year’s event was in San Diego, California.   Over 1500 participants gathered for various workshops, information and tasting sessions, distillery tours, and a whole lot of networking! Cemcorp’s presence was new to some of the attendees but many old connections were renewed. It was a fantastic week of meeting many distillers and vendors in the industry. The founder of ADI, Bill Owens met up with Steve during one of the workshops and was interested in hearing about the changes at Cemcorp. Steve and Dina had the pleasure of connecting with Arun Sinha, the OPTO 22 area manager for Ontario. Opto22 is used in Cemcorp’s PCbrew® and PCflow® control systems. A fellow Canadian, Joanne Gaudreau, the VP Marketing of Cirka Distilleries was in attendance and told Dina about her newly operating distillery in Montreal. The ADI eNewsletter has given a shout out to Cemcorp Ltd. so check it out and the other great resources they have. Cemcorp Ltd. sends a big thank you to ADI and is looking forward to next year’s conference! http://distilling.com/
